Contrary to common assumption, adolescent anabolic-androgenic steroid use will not be limited to severe male athletes. This paper examines the relationships among gender, athletic participation, and health-associated downside behaviors among adolescent steroid users. After controlling for age, race, ethnicity, and parental education, each athletic participation and feminine gender had been negatively associated with most risk behaviors among customers of anabolic steroids. Regression analyses were carried out on a nationally representative pattern of over 16,000 high school college students (the 1997 Youth Risk Behavior Survey), of whom practically 500 had used steroids. Compared to nonusers, steroid customers were significantly more likely to report substance use, suicidal conduct, and sexual risk-taking; nonetheless, patterns of danger habits different by the user’s athletic status and gender.
